Raja is a title used in the Indian subcontinent, primarily by Hindu, Buddhist, Jain,or Sikhmonarchs. Muslimmonarchs tend to have the title of nawabor sultan,but some, like Muslim Rajputs, use that of raja.

"Rana", "rao", "raol", "rawal" or "rawat" are titles equivalent to that of raja common in Rajasthani, Marathiand Hindi. Certain rulers, especially if they are overlordsof several others, bear the title of maharaja(महाराज ( mahārāja)) “great king”) and their wives that of maharani.
